Both Leadhills and Wanlockhead mined galena (lead
sulphide) as the main lead ore. Smaller amounts of copper and zinc were extracted from the common sulphide minerals of these elements: chalcopyrite (Copper) and sphalerite (Zinc), which both occured throughout the orebody. Quartz,
calcite and barite were the predominant gangue minerals
at both locations. |
COLLECTOR SPECIMENS: These are
perhaps the most aesthetic specimens and most commonly
encountered, from a collectors viewpoint, Of
interest to the collector also are fine galena specimens
from both the New Glencrieff Mine at Wanlockhead The ore

not all, these mineral specimens date Collectors

SPHALERITE - BARITE - QUARTZ Sphalerite,
the main ore of zinc at Leadhills & Wanlockhead,
occurs both as fairly pure and as iron-rich examples,
ranging from dark brown to jet black in colour. It was
exploited for economic profit at Wanlockhead, Barite (barium
sulphate) is not often well-crystallized, but small,
tabular crystals can be found. Quartz
is common throughout the mining area. Often massive as
vein material, small crystals PYRITE - CHALCOPYRITE Pyrite and chalcopyrite can be
found associated with other species but tend to be
