The village of Strontian is located in the Highland Region of Scotland and in the former county of Argyll.
On the banks of Loch Sunart, the main summit nearby is Beinn Resipol, at just over 3000 feet.
The mines lie a few kilometres to the north of the village.

Clashgorm Shaft Section: The centre of the most recent activities in Strontian's mining history.
Here, fine specimens have been found of harmotome and calcite.

Strontian has a history of mining spanning almost 300 years. This has endowed it with some interesting historical chapters... From workers uprooting themselves and moving to Leadhills and Wanlockhead - Scotland's main historic ore-mining centre - to employ their skills when Strontian was inactive... to captured forces from Napoleon's Imperial army being employed as part of the workforce...

Mining has focused on several sites over this period. Some of these are of historical interest, while others have a pertinence to mining at the locality in modern times. This page gives a quick snapshot of some of the areas mined.

The Whitesmith Mine has been important in the mineral extraction history of Strontian.

It is also the source of many fine specimens
of brewsterite, strontianite, harmotome and calcite.

The Bellsgrove Mine is another important specimen producer and one of the classic Strontian mines.

Some of the finest specimens of brewsterite and harmotome originated
from the mine.

The Corrantee Mine, located at a distance from the current mining exploitation area, is one of
the oldest mines.

Specimens are few, but harmotome was found here in excellent examples.

Fee Donald Mine, like Corrantee, is sited away from the current operations. Few specimens remain
from its active days.

Nevertheless, it did supply examples of strontianite and harmotome.
